AUSTIN'S TACO TIME!!!

Well, we've come to the end of another month.  Even crazier?  Yesterday was my birthday y'all!  And what better way to celebrate than with some fan art?  Fan art for somebody else no less?!?  It's better to give than receive, right?  Enjoy...

Well here is a familiar face to the CRAZY faithful.  It's Austin Verburg, the animated likeness of Austin's Inferno creator Austin Verburg!  And he brought tacos!  I've known Austin for many years now, meeting him on Twitter pretty early on.  He's been a longtime pal in this wild world of cartooning that I live in and is also one of the few Twitter pals that I've met in real life!  He's a cartoonist, a farmer, a cosplayer...  A true jack of all trades!  Can't wait to see what the future holds for him!

ONE ON ONE WITH 1!!!

We are back CRAZIES!!!  And more than halfway through April already!  Time flies, don't it?  Speaking of which, it's time to stop wasting time and get on with today's post!  Got more toned down fan art to share, so let's get to it!  Enjoy...

1 is certainly one with himself...  And the various creatures of fantasy he and his brother always encounter!  The creation of Josh Hughes, Bot Bros was a hilarious comic about two robot brothers that traverse a fantasy landscape encountering numerous surreal creatures and situations along the way!  Josh is another longtime cartooning pal whose art I've long admired.  Things have been a bit quiet in recent years, but I certainly hope he's tinkering away with his beloved bots and his other awesome creation, Atomic Terrier.  I know I'd love to see some new adventures featuring all of them!

THE BUG GOES BLACK AND WHITE!!!

Welcome back CRAZIES!!!  I know, it's a bit quiet now that WonderCon is over, but like I said last week, it won't be long before the CRAZY Comic Con Countdown returns, so it'll all work out!  In the meantime, I got some old new art to show off, so let's dive right in and take a look!  Enjoy...

 

Well here's a happy-looking bug!  And why shouldn't he be happy?  He and the ants have made it through another cold winter in one piece!  This agreeable insect is Agile, one of the stars of the webcomic Bug Pudding, the creation of J.P. Keslensky.  J.P.'s one of my oldest pals in the cartooning world and when I did my first run of Inktober sketches back in 2016, I decided to pay tribute to him with a CRAZY version of Agile!  I haven't heard from J.P. in awhile, so if you're reading this bud, I hope all is well and that new toons are on the horizon!

WONDERCON 2023!!! IN LIKE A LAMB, OUT LIKE A LION!!!

 

Welcome to April CRAZIES!!!  It's a new month, but we're kicking it off with an old theme: The CRAZY WonderCon Countdown!  It's the finale of the countdown, which is a bit of a bummer I will admit, but this post is still worthwhile as we FINALLY get to what it is we'd been counting down to for so long... WONDERCON 2023!!!  So let's get our comfy shoes on one last time as we make one final trip around the Anaheim Convention Center and take in this year's show!  Enjoy...

Your happily ever after is just a tear drop away...

Loved this Cinderella cosplay!  Nobody ever does the King's assistant!  Turns out these two were big theme park junkies like me!  Spent a good 30 minutes talking about Boysenberry Fest at Knott's!

A lot of old school Trekkies got it, but according to this guy, I was the only "Regular Dude" at the con to get the reference of his hat!  Being a toy nerd kinda helped!  And for those still scratching their heads, just watch the Star Trek episode of the Toys That Made Us and all will make sense!

Tinkerbell is a pixie, so technically she could be among the inhabitants of the Labyrinth.  Especially since Disney does own at least a chunk of that movie by virtue of owning Lucasfilm, the co-producers.

Funko was back and much like last year, took up half of one exhibit hall!  This time around they went with a carnival theme!  Getting inside was no easy task and many items sold out fast.  Still, it's cool to see WonderCon finally get some immersive booths for a change.

Beware of Hitchhiking Ghosts!  They may follow you home!

It's Bender in his wrestling persona the Gender Bender and his evil twin Flexo, who ironically enough is actually LESS evil than Bender is!

Some pretty slick Doc Oc cosplay here!  Never ceases to amaze me how regular folks with no knowledge at all on how to build these things are making these incredible costumes using nothing more than Home Depot scraps while the actual movies with billions of dollars at their disposal are crapping out effects that wouldn't even pass on a Sega Genesis!  My point here?  People are amazing and Hollywood, give your animators proper time to work dammit!

The Easter Bunny was getting a little bit of practice in before the big weekend!

I'm a sucker for obscure cosplay, and Loonette did not disappoint!  There was no carpeting in the exhibit hall, save for the actual booths, so we really could've used some big comfy couches during the show!

Sweet!  Nobody ever ever does Back To The Future III cosplay!

All wonderful things must come to an end.  Thankfully, our god pal "Ed" was there to get the Cosplay Dance Party going so that the con could go out on a high note!

And that was WonderCon 2023!  The first day was a little slow, frighteningly slow even.  Given that it was a school/work day for many, it's not too surprising in hindsight.  But then Saturday came and the floodgates opened!  People and cosplay everywhere!  It was a fun time and I got a LOT of great pics!  Made some new friends while catching up with some old ones.  Had a wonderful time with my good pal and father-to-be, Matt Eargle, who introduced me to Anaheim's premier food hall just a couple of miles away from the con!  Also had the absolute joy of meeting the creative team behind Animaniacs and Freakazoid!  Those folks helped make a rough childhood more tolerable and meeting them made my year!  Also scored a BUNCH of old school comics!  Even my trips to Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm worked out well!  The only real downer was I got a sinus infection from all the air conditioning and wacky weather.  Can't win them all I suppose.  Overall though, it was a great show and I'm eagerly counting down the days until WonderCon 2024!

And so ends the CRAZY WonderCon Countdown, but fear not faithful CRAZIES, for ANOTHER big countdown is on the horizon!  What countdown is that?  Well, come back in June and you'll see!  Until then, some old art will just have to suffice for the next eight weeks.  Until next time, take care, stay safe and I'll catch y'all later!

WONDERCON 2023... STILL LOADING...

 

*Sighs* Well, WonderCon 2023 has passed.  And it was...  I haven't a foggy clue?  I write these posts well in advance of their actual post dates, so I have no idea yet just how cool things were or weren't?  I'm willing to roll the dice that it was a really cool show, but I can guarantee that when this post does eventually hit, I'm gonna be really tired!  So how's about we give Future Jon a break and just launch right into this look back at last year's WonderCon?  Enjoy...

Funko went all out in 2022 taking up half an exhibit hall with their massive booth/experience.  Little did we know they'd really top themselves at SDCC four months later!

Moon Knight was there celebrating his Disney+ show!  He seemed to really luck out on his fountain shot given the lack of crowds!

Hygiene is very important, especially in this post-pandemic world.  We should all thank Ernie for reminding us of that!

And that was WonderCon 2022!  After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, WonderCon made a triumphant return last spring, albeit with some scaling back.  Many attendees and exhibitors were still wary about a large-scale show being held, and rightfully so.  Still, those who did come really enjoyed themselves and I scored a few really cool books at the Stuart NG booth, so it all worked out.  Hopefully last week's show will have seen some of the pre-pandemic traditions return.  Guess we'll find out next week!

WONDERCON 2023 IS HERE!!! BUT FIRST, WONDERCON 2019!!!

 

WELCOME TO WONDERCON WEEK CRAZIES!!!  Can't believe how quickly this week has come!  My room is booked, bags are packed and the truck's gassed up and running!  Yes sir, we are all ready to head up north and get the SoCal Con Season underway!  Of course, the show doesn't start for another two days, so how about we keep ourselves entertained with a look back at a WonderCon from more recent memory?  Doc Brown's time machine is set to 2019 and the speedometer's about to hit 88MPH!!!  Hold on to your Batman underoos kids, because the past is coming at us fast!  Enjoy...

Whatever happened to Doug Funny and Patty Mayonnaise?  They grew up, got hitched and now tour the comic con circuit signing autographs!

And that was WonderCon 2019!  Bit of an off year for me, not because the show was bad.  Far from it actually.  The troubles of home I was having at the time followed me up there, making it really hard to relax and enjoy myself.  Still, it was a great year for cosplay and long box diving, and the impromptu dance parties that kept breaking out at the Fountain Concourse were so much fun!  If I were 15 years younger and braver, I'd totally join in on some of those!

That's all for this week folks, but fear not!  Even though WonderCon starts on Friday, the countdown still continues as I post these in advance, so there's a little more fun to be had in the coming weeks!  If you're going to Anaheim this weekend, please be courteous and respectful to others.  We're all adults here for the most part and need to act like it.  If we all follow the rules and just plain be kind to one another, there's no reason we can't all have a good time.  I'll be doing my best to update everybody on Twitter as the weekend progresses, but my phone service has long had a spotty record in that building, so here's hoping!
